Review: Gok Wan Westfield Style Tours

Today, I had the absolute pleasure (thanks to Nat from Fashionista Events) of sitting front row at Gok Wan’s Westfield Style Tour at Garden City. Not only was I really excited to finally see the man himself having missed out last August however it was also high on my priority list to bring those who couldn’t make it today; an honest review of my opinion on the show. So here goes …

Westfield Garden City was an absolute concrete jungle today! There is no denying the fact that ‘fashion’ and ‘styling’ are no longer an after thought … Women of all shapes, sizes and skin-tones are more determined than ever to step out in true style this Spring/ Summer; now this is something that excites me. There is nothing I love more than having the skills to be able to allow both men and women to feel 100% confident despite whichever flaws they see within themselves.

Aunty Gok has been on my mind for a little while now. Naturally, as a very successful international stylist, I find his journey incredibly inspiring!

Last week, I tuned in and watched the live stream of Gok at Westfield Parramatta and only today had I wished that I didn’t. Today’s show was very similar and a lot of Gok’s expressions, jokes and general chit chat were almost identical therefore leaving me with a feeling that the show wasn’t as ‘personal’ and as ‘intimate’ as I had hoped it would be.

It also hit home that Gok is here to do a job and with time restrictions and one enormous list of locations up his sleeve, there is only so much that can be delivered.

Westfield Garden City Stylist – Sara Hatten-Masterson and Channel 10 News Reader Amanda McLeay revving up the audience in anticipation for Gok.

Sara did a fantastic job of selecting onlookers at random and helping them discover their body shape with a quick 5 minute Style Session.

Gok Wan

Joanna was a gorgeous 18 yr old who beat the odds and won a complete style make-over (with Gok). I write the words ‘with Gok‘ hesitantly as I am really not sure that Gok himself pulled suitable options for all body shapes and sizes before making his debut. Actually, I know this for a fact – Gok was hugely impressed with another one of the style make-overs from today in which he applauded the stylists backstage for their efforts. This competition was titled ‘Win a Make-Over by Gok’ … Was this make-over actually conducted by Gok? Was this actually a result of Gok’s style? Something to think about …

Joanna sees her transformation for the first time and absolutely loves the results.

Gok Wan selects a handful of incredibly brave women from the audience and helps determine their correct body shape using the new Westfield Body Calculator. Cudos to all the amazing women today who had the courage and the confidence to get up on stage in front of thousands of people. This takes a huge amount of courage and in my books highlights the fact that these women are already on the road to a lifetime of complete confidence.

Michelle’s Transformation Revealed.

Loris’s  Transformation Revealed.

Loris had the biggest impact on me today; Loris was a beautiful lady in her 60′s, who as I quote ‘would love a more edgier look’. Her transformation was mind blowing and the happiness she expelled after her make-over was infectious. Her new look was figure flattering, on-trend and suited perfectly to her age without looking too old and frumpy as she had feared.

Robyn’s Transformation Revealed.

Alison’s Transformation Revealed.

Rebekah’s Transformation Revealed.

Debbie’s Transformation Revealed.

Sue’s Transformation Revealed.

The ladies take one more strut down the runway parading their new look. Each lady got to keep the outfit they were wearing which made the transformations all the more worthwhile; being able to re-create the look at home in the company of their family and friends.

My 3 favourite looks on the left.

All in all, my impression of Gok Wan is as follows: he is a very funny and charismatic person, one of a kind to say the least! He has the ability to make women feel fantastic through his clever words of wisdom and his nurturing nature however my opinion of the Gok Wan Westfield Style Tour is a little stale. Today, Gok made more of an impression on me through his hilarious dry humour. On almost every occasion, his style advice was backed up by saying something funny rather than answering people’s style questions factually. Gok is a fabulous presenter and absolutely played the part of ‘mediator’ perfectly today! If I went to the Westfield Style Tours for actual style advice, I must admit, I would have been a little disappointed. I have left his tour today with STILL no real idea of Gok Wan’s personal styling knowledge however in saying this, I have left one happy stylist as I bask in the glory that 8 FABULOUS women are just that little bit happier about themselves today despite who or what made has made them feel this way and for that reason alone, I raise my glass …

Cheers Aunty Gok!

A massive thank you to Natalie from Fashionista Events for making today possible x
