I recently returned from 2 weeks in New York City. I knew before I left that I wanted to use the opportunity to flex my capsule wardrobe muscle and to see how I’d go with just a few versatile pieces to get me through the 2 weeks. I love the idea of capsule wardrobes when travelling because a. you’ll want plenty of space left in your luggage for overseas purchases, b. who wants to think too long & hard about what you’ll wear each day when there’s so much sightseeing to do?! and c. it gives you a chance to experiment and come up with new and exciting outfits without feeling suffocated by the thought of having to be so restrictive long-term. Before deciding on the exact pieces I was going to take, there were a few things I considered first –

THE WEATHER

This is quite crucial because nobody wants to walk their way through Central Park in a heatwave knowing you’ve only packed a bunch of sweaters. I did a quick Google search on the average temps in NYC during July/ Aug. They were actually experiencing a heatwave whilst I was there with temperatures ranging from about 18 degrees to 35 degrees and approx. 85% humidity … scorching!

ITINERARY

It helps to have a rough idea of what you’ll be doing when you’re there too. I knew that we’d be spending most of our days sightseeing and shopping which meant a lot of walking. I also knew that we’d go out at night a few times and perhaps see a Museum or two which meant slightly dressier pieces than you’d wear for walking but nothing too glam.

COLOUR PALETTE

Packing with a colour palette in mind just makes mixing and matching so much easier and less time consuming. It also means that you won’t need to think too much about whether or not colours work well together which means you’ll always look polished. I chose a simple colour palette of Black, White, Grey & Navy because most of my warm weather clothes fall within these colours.

The 12 Pieces In My Capsule Wardrobe

So in total, I took 12 pieces of clothing with me –

  • 5x Tops
  • 5x Bottoms
  • 1x Dress
  • 1x Jacket

When deciding what tops to pack, I find it useful to brainstorm all the different ways you can wear a particular top – ie. a shirt can be worn untucked and loose, tucked in and taught, worn over the top of  dresses and tied at the waist or worn layered and underneath dresses, so a shirt is always a good choice when travelling. I actually took my black silk pyjama shirt with me which obviously works wonders as pyjamas but it works equally as good for both day/ night and unless you read the ‘Bras N Things’ tag on the inside, no one would know. Bonus points here for being able to wear my PJ’s on the flight home too!

If you plan to exercise whilst travelling, I’d take an additional outfit purely for working out (sports bra, tank, shorts/ leggings) but I’d try to use the same pair of sneakers if possible.

What I Wore Each Day

Extra Outfit Combinations

When I was at JFK waiting for my flight home, I thought I’d jot down some extra outfit combinations that I could have worn, if I were there for longer than 2 weeks. I came up with another 15 outfits which means that these 12 pieces would have created a months worth of different outfits before having to wear the same outfit twice – amazing!
