Finding time in the day to exercise when you’re busy, feels downright impossible. I’ve been there, I’m still there and if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know how and what I do to keep fit and I follow this specific schedule because it works for me as a busy wife, mum and business owner. So, because I  understand that you’re short on time, let’s get straight into it. Here are my 6 tips for exercising when you’re busy –

KEEP IT QUICK

Never underestimate the benefit of a short workout. If you can find 20mins 3 or 4 times a week, then you’ll reach your health & fitness goals if you remain consistent. The most effective short workouts are HIIT style workouts.

HOME WORKOUTS

Let’s face it, by the time you’ve got yourself dressed and to the gym, you could have knocked out a short HIIT session in that time. I exercise from home for this exact reason because I can literally roll out of bed in my undies and get it done. Yes, I don’t necessarily want to be exercising at 6am but I have a short amount of time then and I’m more likely too, if it’s from home. There are so many home workout programs you could to these days and most of them come with an incredibly supportive and inspiring online community which sure beats going to the gym on your own. 

MAKE IT AN APPOINTMENT

Seriously, block out 30mins just as you would a dentist or hair appt. – you wouldn’t cancel one of these appointments so make the time to workout a non-negotiable too – you don’t have to tell anyone what you’re doing at that time, just say you’re busy and that you’ll get back to them once you’re done.

CONSIDER ACCIDENTAL EXERCISE

If you’ve heard me talk about the Blue Zones before, then you’ll know that the worlds longest living people don’t go to a gym. Instead, they utilise accidental exercise to keep themselves fit and healthy. Accidental exercise could be anything from taking the stairs instead of a lift, walking the dog an extra 500m, walking around the house whilst you’re on the phone, getting up to change the tv channel instead of using a remote. Try and look for small opportunities throughout the day to move because it all adds up! Can you park a little further away to fit in a few more minutes walking? Can you jump off the bus one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way? Can you go for a walk on your lunch break?

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WEEKENDS

Make up for lost time on the weekends. Quick workouts are great during the week but if you can, use your weekend to get outdoors and be active which will ultimately set your coming week up for success too.

SIGN UP FOR AN EVENT/ CHALLENGE

There’s nothing more motivating than a deadline or challenge. Find an event or short, achievable challenge, pay the required fee and block out the time for your workouts straight away.
