If someone asked me what was one thing that they could do today to improve their personal style and the way they look, I’d tell them to highlight or draw attention to their waist. Reason being, this creates a dividing line that sits about 1/3 of the way down the body which is said throughout the world to be the most aesthetically pleasing to look at. It is based on a theory that proportion is most pleasing to others when all areas of design are not exactly the same (eg. as the body would be if it was divided in 1/2 visually at high hip level).

For the majority of us, this is one of the easiest ways to look your best with very minimal effort and you can do this by styling an outfit a few different ways –

CINCH WITH A BELT

Experiment with wrapping a thin belt around the waist to draw attention here. The more contrasting the belt, the more attention it will attract. If you’re wanting to create shape but in a more subtle way, opt for a belt in the same colour as the top/ dress.

WEAR HIGH-WAISTED PANTS/ SKIRTS

Wearing high-waisted bottoms isn’t flattering on every body shape but if this style works well for you, then go ahead and reap the rewards without the need to accessorise.

WEAR A CROPPED JACKET OR BLAZER

Another clever trick is to layer with a cropped jacket/ blazer/ cardigan/ bolero. The eye is instantly drawn to wear the jacket ends creating a visual horizontal line at the waist.

WEAR A NECKLACE/ SCARF THAT ENDS AT WAIST HEIGHT

This isn’t the most effective way to highlight the waist however it certainly works if done correctly. You can either choose to wear a long necklace that ends just below the bust or better yet, wear a long necklace with an eye-catching pendant that sits at waist height. Alternatively, you could drape a scarf around your neck and tie it to finish at waist height which acts like a focal point.

WEAR WAIST CINCHING CLOTHING

If you’re going to invest in clothes make them work that little bit harder for you by purchasing garments that already include waist-cinching details like a drawstring, a horizontal panel of fabric or an attached belt.

In #MYEPICSELF Fashion I go into a lot more detail about this which includes illustrations on how you can achieve flattering proportions no matter what body shape you have or if you are considered to be short or long-waisted.
